About the Instructor
Zhang Weiwei
Professor of Political Science; Director the China Institute of Fudan University

The rise of China is not that of an ordinary country, but a rise of civilizational state, an amalgam of the world’s oldest continuous civilization and a huge modern state. The concept of “civilizational state” has been openly embraced by major non-Western powers, such as Russia and India, who are using the term to decribe themselves. Moreover, the term has also gained traction among Western political or intellectual leaders. In a thoughtful exploration, Professor Zhang,Dean of China Institute at Fudan University, delves into the notion of a civilizational state and examine how it differs from the concept of a nation-state.
