When sociologists discuss generations in China, they often refer to “generation gulfs” because each successive generation is born into a context drastically different from the political, social, and economic realities experienced by previous generations. Various “isms” are used to describe these shifts—nationalism, patriotism, socialism. Underlying it all is a fundamental tension between a growing sense of confidence and an increasing sense of uncertainty.
