FINA 2024 Doping Tests: Top 32 Most Tested Athletes Are All Chinese Swimmers

Recently, the World Aquatics Federation announced the 2024 data for doping tests on athletes. Chinese swimmers dominate the top 32 positions: Doha World Championship women’s 100m breaststroke champion and Paris Olympics silver medalist Tang Qianting leads with 38 tests, followed closely by Qin Haiyang with 35 tests. The foreign athlete with the most tests is American Olympic champion Regan Smith, with 22 tests.
The data shows that throughout 2024, a total of 1572 in-competition and out-of-competition doping tests were conducted across the six major disciplines of swimming, diving, artistic swimming, water polo, open water, and high diving worldwide. Chinese swimmers were tested significantly more, with young athletes Chen Luying and Dong Zhihao undergoing 34 tests following Tang Qianting and Qin Haiyang. Ye Shiwen, Yu Yiting, and Fei Liwei each had 33 tests, Wang Shun 32 tests, Pan Zhanle 31 tests, while Zhang Yufei, Li Bingjie, and Xu Jiayu each had 30 tests, and Sun Yang was tested 14 times.
The foreign athletes tested the most were three American women: Regan Smith with 22 tests, Kate Douglass with 20, and Gretchen Walsh with 20. World Aquatics’ Male and Female Athletes of the Year, Marchand and McIntosh, were tested 16 times each.
