On May 22, Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Mao Ning hosted a regular press conference.

A Reuters reporter asked, the head of Taiwan’s foreign affairs department, Lin Chia-lung, stated yesterday, “Taiwan can decide for itself whether it is a country.” What is the Foreign Ministry’s response to this?

Mao Ning responded, Taiwan has never been a country, and such statements only expose someone’s arrogance and ignorance, representing blatant “Taiwan independence” provocation.

“There is only one China in the world, and Taiwan is an inseparable part of Chinese territory. The government of the People’s Republic of China is the sole legitimate government representing all of China. This is a basic norm of international relations and a widely-recognized consensus in the international community,” Mao Ning said. The future of Taiwan can only be decided by the more than 1.4 billion Chinese people, including compatriots in Taiwan. China’s reunification is inevitable and unstoppable, as it is a historical trend that no force can obstruct.
