BYD surpasses Tesla in European EV sales

According to the Financial Times on May 22, Chinese automaker BYD’s monthly EV registrations in Europe surpassed Tesla’s for the first time.

In April, BYD registered 7,231 battery electric vehicles in Europe, a year-on-year increase of 169%, while Tesla registered 7,165, down 49% year-on-year. Including plug-in hybrid models, BYD’s total registrations surged 359% that month.

BYD’s success lies in its diversified strategy: it offers 8 models across over 30 European countries, including a budget-friendly model priced at just €22,290, with virtually no direct competitors.

Additionally, BYD and other Chinese automakers launched plug-in hybrids that are not subject to the EU’s proposed tariffs of up to 45% on Chinese-made EVs.

Xiaomi unveils 3nm chip, outperforms Apple in several areas

On May 22, Chinese tech company Xiaomi held a product launch event where President Lei Jun introduced its self-developed flagship chip “Surging O1,” claiming it surpasses Apple in multiple performance metrics.

The chip uses second-generation 3nm technology, with an AnTuTu benchmark score of 3,004,137 and includes 19 billion transistors—on par with Apple’s latest processor.

It features a 10-core, four-cluster architecture: 2 ultra-large cores, 4 performance cores, and 4 efficiency cores, with a max frequency of 3.9GHz. It achieved a single-core score of 3008 and a multi-core score exceeding 9000, surpassing Apple’s chip.

The GPU performance is even more remarkable. With a 16-core Immortalis-G925, it performs on par with or better than Apple’s in many aspects.

Xiaomi is now the second Chinese phone maker after Huawei to mass-produce a flagship SoC, and the fourth globally capable of independently designing and launching flagship chips using the most advanced manufacturing processes—after Apple, Qualcomm, and MediaTek.
